3D printed decoy eggs sitting on flexible 3D printed nest mats inside a chicken coop nesting box
Two 3D printed coop upgrades working together: flexible nest mats + decoy eggs.

Two problems in my chicken coop, two 3D printed fixes. My hens were cracking their own eggs, so I designed a soft, flexible nest mat. And to teach new hens where to lay, I printed decoy eggs. Here’s how both work, what I printed them in, and where to get the nest mat file.

Upgrade 1: A flexible nest mat that stops cracked eggs

The problem

My chickens were cracking their own eggs. Plop, crack. Plop, crack. They kicked all the bedding out of the nesting box and laid right on the bare wood.

The fix

So I designed a soft mat printed in flexible PEBA. It does three things:

  • Cushions the egg: no more eggs hitting bare wood.
  • Mess falls right through: the open pattern lets debris drop instead of piling up around the egg.
  • Dark mat, light eggs: you spot them instantly when you check the box.

Filament: eSUN PEBA-85A

I printed the mat in eSUN PEBA-85A, a flexible filament. These are the print settings eSUN recommended for it:

SettingValue
Nozzle temp240°C
Bed temp70°C
Max volumetric flow3.8 mm³/s
Print speed80 mm/s
Flow ratio1.0
Dry before printing60°C for 8+ hours
eSUN’s recommended PEBA-85A settings.

Upgrade 2: 3D printed decoy eggs

Decoy eggs teach new hens where to lay and get them using all the nesting boxes, not just one favorite. I printed a set, cleaned them up, put them back together, and dropped them in the coop.

Three finished 3D printed decoy eggs in white, beige and brown PLA next to a mini hot glue gun
Finished decoys in three egg colors.

How I made them

  1. Printed the egg halves.
  2. Pulled them apart and cleaned out the threads and supports. One was clean, one fought me.
  3. Reassembled them and sealed them with hot glue.
  4. Put them in the nesting boxes.
